North, Dudley

    0.02 sec.

North, Dudley (1614–1691)

English economist. He is remembered for his Discourses upon Trade (1691). This work anticipated Adam Smith's doctrines and those of the free trade school, while being free from the prejudices and fallacies of the mercantile system.

North made a fortune in trading with the Levant and subsequently became a commissioner of customs and entered Parliament where, according to his brother, Roger North (1653–1734), he assumed the place of ‘manager for the Crown in all matters of revenue’.
