North Charleston

City in Charleston and Dorchester counties, southeastern South Carolina; population (2000) 79,600. Situated on the Ashley and Cooper rivers just north of Charleston, it is the largest of the dormitory towns and commercial suburbs that surround the old city.

North Charleston is home to a small textile industry. The Charleston International Airport is located just to the north of the city, with adjacent Air Force and Navy facilities. Having been rapidly expanded from the middle of the 20th century onwards to house military personnel and airport employees, as well as former Charleston residents, North Charleston faced an uncertain future following military cutbacks in the 1990s.
