North Chicago

North Chicago

City in Lake County, Illinois, on Lake Michigan, immediately south of Waukegan and 64 km/40 mi north of Chicago; population (1990) 35,000. The city forms part of the industrial complex centred around Waukegan.

North Chicago's manufactures include chemicals, refractory metals, electrical condensers and generators, locks, hardware, car parts, machinery, and sweets. A labour dispute here in 1937 resulted in a landmark Supreme Court decision banning sit-down strikes. The University of Health Sciences of the Chicago Medical School is situated here, as is the Great Lakes Naval Training Station.
