North Dallas

Extensive residential and commercial district of Dallas, Texas, north of the Trinity River, the city centre, and Interstate 30. Many of the city's most affluent neighbourhoods are here, as well as the prestigious independent cities of Highland Park and University Park. North Dallas is noted for its expensive shopping malls.

Preston Hollow, northwest of University Park, was independent until annexed by North Dallas in 1945. The upper reaches of White Rock Creek lie to the east while, to the west, Turtle Creek has become a major development area. The Lyndon B Johnson Freeway, Dallas's ring road, intersects here with both the Dallas Tollway and the Central Expressway; at the intersections stand the Galleria and other leading commercial developments. Love Field (superseded as the city's major airport in 1973 by Dallas–Fort Worth International) lies to the northwest. North of the district, the adjoining cities of Addison, Plano, and Richardson are home to large electronics factories; the area is popularly known as ‘Silicon Prairie’.
