Unitary authority in central Scotland, created in 1996 from three districts of Strathclyde region.

History

former industrial region of central Scotland

Economy

It is an area of contrasting economic fortunes. To the north in Cumbernauld New Town, prestige industrial estates attract high technology investment, while to the south, the impacts of de-industrialization are felt, despite concerted efforts to regenerate the area. It is overwhelmingly an urban economy.

Environment

There are eight Sites of Special Scientific Interest and three country parks.

Administrative history

The districts of Motherwell, Monklands, and Cumbernauld and Kilsyth were merged into North Lanarkshire in 1996. Prior to 1975 the area was part of the counties of Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, and Stirlingshire.
