North Little Rock

City in Pulaski County, central Arkansas; population (2000) 60,400. It stands on the northern bank of the Arkansas River, opposite the state capital of Little Rock.

North Little Rock developed after the arrival of the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1853, later becoming the site of its freight marshalling yards and workshops. The town separated from Little Rock in 1903, and was given its present name in 1917. It is a commercial and industrial city, whose manufactures include paper and food products, textiles, clothing, machinery, chemicals, and metals. North Little Rock is the site of Shorter College (founded 1886) and Camp Joseph T Robinson, a military training institute.
