North Smithfield

Town in Providence County, northern Rhode Island; population (1990) 10,500. North Smithfield lies on the Massachusetts state line, 21 km/13 mi northwest of Providence and adjacent (west) to Woonsocket, on the Branch River.

The town incorporates the villages of Union Center, Primrose, Branch Village, Forestdale, and Slatersville, the centre of government. Past industries here have included textile manufacturing and finishing, and thread and wool processing; today the area is largely residential.
