North Sydney

Town in Cape Breton County, in the far east of Nova Scotia; population (1990) 7,300. It lies on the east coast of Cape Breton Island and the western side of Sydney Harbour, 10 km/6 mi northwest of Sydney.

North Sydney is a port and trade centre for the surrounding coalmining and industrial area. Ferries for Newfoundland (Argentia and Channel Port aux Basques) leave from here, and the town is the winter base for a large fishing fleet.
