North Vernon

City in Jennings County, southeastern Indiana, 32 km/20 mi southeast of Columbus; population (1990) 5,300.

North Vernon was founded in 1854. Traditionally a railway and market centre, it now has a car accessories industry and manufactures such products as carpets and domestic appliances. Sawmilling and furniture making also contrribute to the local economy. Immediately south of the city lies the town and county seat of Vernon; population 370.
