City in south-central Arizona, a largely residential suburb 13 km/8 mi east of central Phoenix; population (1990) 130,100. The business district features Arizona arts and crafts and retail stores. Products include electronic components, clothing, and ceramics, and there is a growing financial and corporate sector. Tourism is also important.

Settled in 1895, Scottsdale is now a rapidly expanding centre for resort and retirement communities. The city lies at the western edge of the Salt River Indian Reservation.
