Northern State
| Region of Sudan, part of the ancient kingdom of Nubia; area 477,000 sq km/184,170 sq mi. Most of the state is uninhabited desert plateau apart from wadis (watercourses, dry except in the rainy season) on either side of the Nile. Dates, pulses, and cereals are grown. The major town is Dongola. |
