Northwest rebellionRevolt against the Canadian government March–May 1885 by the métis (people of mixed French-Canadian and American Indian descent). Led by their political leader Louis Riel and his military lieutenant Gabriel Dumont (1838–1906), the métis population of what is now Saskatchewan rebelled after a number of economic and political grievances were ignored by the government. Fearing a full-scale Indian uprising, troops were quickly despatched west along the newly completed transcontinental railway and the rebellion was suppressed. Riel was tried and hanged November 1885.
