Norwalk

City in Fairfield County, southwest Connecticut, on the mouth of the Norwalk River on Long Island Sound, 44 mi/70 km northeast of New York City; population (1996 est) 78,000. Electronic equipment, chemicals, plastics, clothing, hardware, and furniture are manufactured. Its former industries included the manufacture of hats, nails, clocks, and paper. It is now increasingly a commuter town for the many cities of the region. It is home to Norwalk Community College and the Norwalk State Technical College, both founded in 1961.

The city was founded in 1649, and burned by the British during the American Revolution. Norwalk is linked to New York City by rail and the Connecticut Turnpike.
