Norwood

Town in Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts, on the Neponset River; population (2000 est) 28,600. It occupies the southern end of an extensive technology park along Route 128, and produces electronic and computer equipment, floor coverings, roofing materials, machinery, measuring instruments, athletic footwear, and surgical and foundry products. It was incorporated in 1872.

The area was first settled by Europeans in 1678 as part of Dedham, but was often called Tiot, its American Indian name. Originally an agricultural area, it became industrialized after being connected to the railway in 1849. It developed railway repair facilities, a roofing plant, printing, and tanning, but these industries later closed down.
