nosebleed

Bleeding from the nose. It may be caused by injury, infection, high blood pressure, or some disorders of the blood. Although usually minor and easily controlled, the loss of blood may occasionally be so rapid as to be life-threatening, particularly in small children. Most nosebleeds can be stopped by simply squeezing the nose for a few minutes with the head held forwards, but in exceptional cases transfusion may be required and the nose may need to be packed with ribbon gauze or cauterized.
