Nostell Priory

Outstanding Palladian house in West Yorkshire, England, 8 km/5 mi east of Wakefield. It was built in 1733 by James Paine for Rowland Winn, 4th Baronet, on the site of a 12th-century priory. Later in the century the 5th Baronet commissioned Adam to add four large wings to the house. Of these only the northeast was built, as the work was curtailed when the 5th Baronet died. Nostell was given to the National Trust in 1955 by the 4th Lord St Oswald.

The state rooms, decorated by Robert Adam, Joseph Rose (1745–99), and Zucchi (1726–95), contain notable pictures and Chippendale furniture that was made especially for the house.

It is thought that Chippendale began his career at Nostell.
