Noto

Town in southeast Sicily, 25 km/15 mi southwest of Syracuse, 4 km/2 mi from the coast; population (1993 est) 21,800. Noto dates from 1703; the original town, 8 km/5 mi to the north, occupied the site of Roman Netum, and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. The town has a baroque appearance, and nearby are prehistoric tombs, Greek cemeteries, and Christian catacombs.
