notturno

18th-century forerunner of the nocturne, not then a single lyrical instrumental piece, but a composition in several movements similar to the serenade or the divertimento. In the 19th century the notturno became simply the Italian equivalent of the nocturne, as in Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream music.
