Nouâdhibou

Main port of Mauritania, located on the border with Western Sahara, 325 km/202 mi north of Nouakchott; population (2000) 72,300. There is a railway to the iron-mines of Zouerate on the western edge of the Sahara. Industries include oil-refining.

The Malians left Nouadhibou in Mauritania less than a week ago in a small boat heading for Las Palmas in the Spanish Canary Islands, but they were intercepted by the Moroccan coastguard, according to the Red Cross.
Red Cross sources in Nouadhibou said that an unprecedented number of migrants had arrived in the port city in recent days from other parts of Mauritania and west Africa.
Security forces arrested him when he tried to enter Nouadhibou and turned him over to the police who are bringing him to the capital now," a spokesmen for the Front, said.
