Novak, Jan (1921–1984)

Czech composer. He studied at the Brno Conservatory 1940–46 and at the Prague Academy. He was influenced at first by the neoclassicism of Martinů, with whom he studied in New York, but then turned to jazz and serialism.

Ensemble

Orpheus et Eurydice for soprano, viola d'amore, and piano (1971).

Orchestral and choral

concerto for two pianos (1955), Philharmonic Dances for orchestra (1956), Variations on a theme of Martinů for orchestra (1959), Dodo, oratorio (1967), Ludi Concertantes for 18 instruments (1981), Symphonia bipartita (1983).
