Novara

Capital of Novara province in Piedmont region, northern Italy, 45 km/28 mi west of Milan, between the Piedmont and Lombardy plains; population (1991) 102,500. It is an important road and rail junction, linking Turin, Milan, Genoa, and Switzerland. Rice from the surrounding plain, flour, and cheese are processed here; the city serves as an agricultural marketing centre. There are chemical, textile, and precision engineering plants, and toy manufacturing and publishing industries. There is a university here.

Novara has a 13th-century town hall, a 15th-century mayor's palace, and a ruined castle, built in 1341 and completed 1492–94 under Duke Ludovico Sforza.
