Novato

City in Marin County, northwestern California; population (1990) 47,600. It lies on Novato Creek, west of San Pablo Bay, and 40 km/25 mi north of San Francisco.

Largely residential, Novato is situated in a dairy-farming region. Hamilton Air Force Base, which was established in 1935, lies on the bay to the southeast. Retail distribution operations and some light manufacturing industry are among the local businesses. The Renaissance Pleasure Faire, held in the autumn, is a major tourist attraction.
