Novaya Zemlya

Arctic island group belonging to the Russian Federation; area 81,279 sq km/31,382 sq mi. A few Samoyed (people from northwest Siberia) inhabit the area. It is rich in birds, seals, and walrus.

The archipelago lies in the Arctic Ocean between the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea. It is a continuation northwards of the Urals and is divided into two large and numerous small islands by the narrow strait of Matochkin Shar. The islands extend 925 km/575 mi from north to south.
