Novomoskovsk

City in the Tula oblast (region) of the western Russian Federation; population (1996 est) 143,000. Novomoskovsk lies at the source of the River Don, 55 km/34 mi southeast of Tula. After the regional capital (Tula), it is the second-largest industrial centre of the Moscow Coal Basin. It has a large chemical industry (producing explosives, nitrate fertilizers, gypsum, and sulphuric acid), and an important power station, around which the city was founded in 1929.
