Novorossiysk

Seaport city on the Black Sea, in Krasnodar krai (territory), northern Caucasia, in the Russian Federation; population (1996 est) 203,000. The centre of the country's cement industry, it also has shipbuilding, metalworking, machine-tool, food-processing, and light industries. With the loss of its naval bases at Odessa and on the Crimea following Ukrainian independence in 1991, the Russian Federation is developing Novorossiysk as a new port facility for the Black Sea Fleet.

Novorossiysk was founded as a Russian fort in 1838. Its industrial growth dates from 1882, when the first cement works was built. The harbour was built in 1888 and before 1914 was second only to Odessa in grain exports. The town was the scene of heavy fighting in World War II.
