Nowa Huta

Industrial suburb of Kraków, Poland, on the Vistula River. It is the centre of the country's steel industry.

Because of excessive pollution, the area around Nowa Huta has been declared one of Poland's 27 ecologically endangered areas. In 1981 an aluminium plant was closed after the dumping of toxic waste led to severe illnesses. The amount of soot in the air is 35 times greater than that judged dangerous to health.
