Nueces

River in south Texas; length 510 km/317 mi. It rises in Edwards County, west of San Antonio, and flows south and southeast, finally emerging into Corpus Christi Bay, in the Gulf of Mexico. It is an important source of irrigation.

The Nueces was named for the pecan nuts (Spanish, nueces) found along its course. Between the Texas Revolution (1836) and the treaty (1848) ending the Mexican War, it formed the northern boundary of the disputed Mexican province of Nuevo Santander (the Rio Grande was the southern boundary).
