Nueva Esparta

State of Venezuela, comprising Margarita Island, Coche, and other, smaller islands in the Caribbean; population (1996) 330,307. Margarita Island is an important tourist and holiday resort; its capital, La Asunción, is also the capital of the province. There are pearl fisheries and manufactures from fibres.

Also belonging to Venezuela are the Islas de Aves, Isla Blanquilla, the Los Hermanes islands, and the Islas Roques, the only coral atolls in the Caribbean Atlantic.
