Nueva San Salvador

Town in the department of La Libertad, El Salvador; population (2005) 161,500. It lies 13 km/8 mi west of San Salvador. It is a coffee-growing centre. The huge Crater of San Salvador volcano lies north of the town. It lies on the Pan-American Highway in central El Salvador, and is the capital of La Libertad department. The surrounding area has many livestock farms as well as coffee plantations and industries also include leather products, soap, and candles. It was founded as Nueva Ciudad de San Salvador in 1854 after the capital, San Salvador, had been destroyed by an earthquake.

The town has a training school for factory technicians, which was established with the help of British money and technical expertise.
