Nuevo Léon

State of northeastern Mexico, on the border of the USA; area 64,555 sq km/ 24,925 sq mi; population (2000 est) 3,826,200. Its capital is Monterrey. Nuevo Léon is crossed by the Sierra Madre Oriental and became a state in 1824. The main occupations are cattle-raising and farming, producing cereals, sugar-cane, cotton, and fruit. There are rich deposits of gold, silver, lead, copper, phosphates, and manganese and industries include iron, steel, and textiles.
