Nuevo Laredo| Town on the northern border of the state of Tamaulipas in Mexico, 220 km/137 mi northwest of Monterrey; population (1995) 275,100. It is situated on the southwest bank of the Rio Grande (Mexican name Rio Bravo del Norte), which separates Mexico from the USA; Laredo, in the US state of Texas, is on the opposite bank. Nuevo Laredo is the commercial centre of a productive cotton-growing and cattle-raising area. Industries include textiles and cotton manufacturing. It is also an important business centre. |
| The town is one of the most important points of entry into Mexico, receiving more daily visitors from the north than any other city along the US–Mexico border; it is the terminal of the Mexico City–Nuevo Laredo railway and of the Inter-American Highway. |
