Nuoro

Capital of Nuoro province, central Sardinia, 130 km/64 mi northeast of Cagliari; population (2001) 36,700. Since the 1960s it has developed service industries, including public administration, banking, and commerce; and a small industrial sector including engineering and building materials. Agricultural produce includes sheep, olives, grapes, cereals, and other fruit and vegetables. Tourism is developing, focused on the natural attractions of the surrounding area.

The author Grazia Deledda, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, was born in Nuoro. The poet Sebastino Satta (1867–1914) was also born here.
