The earthquake struck at 2:47 am (1247 GMT) and was centred 193 kilometres (120 miles) east-northeast of the capital Nuku'alofa at a depth of 62 kilometres, USGS said.
The 34-year-old Princess Ashika was 86 kilometres (53 miles) northeast of the capital Nuku'alofa en route to Ha'afeva, in the outlying Nomuka islands, when it sank moments after issuing a mayday call around midnight on August 5.
The boat overturned around midnight on Wednesday about 54 miles northeast of the Tongan capital, Nuku'alofa.
