Nursery Suite

Orchestral suite in seven movements by Elgar. Dedicated to the then Duchess of York and her daughters Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose, it was first performed as a concert in London's Queen's Hall on 20 August 1931. The movements are: 1. Aubade; 2. The Serious Doll; 3. Busy-ness; 4. The Sad Doll; 5. The Wagon (Passes); 6. The Merry Doll; 7. Dreaming, including a coda, Envoy.

The Queen is also behind the 1931 Nursery Suite - she was its four-year-old dedicatee - but there is no royal ceremony in these eight wistful, almost balletic movements.
Schaufuss's plans for the future include a centenary tribute to Sir Frederick Ashton in 2004: "Something special, something a little out of the ordinary, just like our school is now doing Nursery Suite," he promises.
