Nusch-Nuschi, Das

Opera in one act for Burmese marionettes by Hindemith (libretto by F Blei). It was composed in 1920 and produced in Stuttgart on 4 June 1921; its conductor Fritz Busch, claimed to be shocked by satirical references to Wagner's Tristan. The castration of an Oriental philanderer is accompanied by a quotation from King Marke's music: ‘Mir – dies?’ (‘This – to me?’).
