Nutley

Township in Essex County, northeastern New Jersey; population (1990) 27,100. Nutley is situated 5 km/3 mi south of Passaic, on the Passaic River.

Dutch and English settlers arrived here in the 1660s and 1670s. Successively part of Newark, Bloomfield, and Belleville, Nutley became an independent town in 1874. After the Civil War, it became an extremely popular location for artists and writers. It functions mainly as a dormitory town for the New York area, but also manufactures pharmaceuticals, electronics, clothing, and paper goods.
