Nyack

Village in Orangetown, Rockland County, southeastern New York State; population (1990) 6,600. Nyack stands on the west bank of the Hudson River, opposite Tarrytown on the Tappan Zee (a wide stretch of the Hudson), and 13 km/8 mi northwest of the Bronx.

Nyack was settled in the late 17th century and became a busy river landing; its waterfront is still active as a mooring for pleasure craft. Since the early 20th century, it has mainly served as a commuter village for New York City, but also has some industry of its own, including boatbuilding and the manufacture of sewing machines. Tourism is a mainstay of the economy. The former home of the artist Edward Hopper, who was born here, has been made into an art gallery.
