Nyanja

A central African people living mainly in Malawi, and numbering about 400,000 (1984). The Nyanja are predominantly farmers, living in villages under a hereditary monarchy. They speak a Bantu language belonging to the Niger-Congo family.

The main ethnic groups are: Chewa, Nyanja, Tumbuka, Yao, Lomwe, Sena, Tonga, Ngoni and Ngonde (9).
Zintu, which means "a multitude of things" in Nyanja, the language of a Zambian tribe, sells hand-crafted goods made by craftspeople from Zambia, Kenya and Swaziland.
Culture: Maravi (including Nyanja, Chewa, Tonga and Tumbuka) 58%; Lomwe 18%; Yao 13%; Ngoni 7%.
