Nye, James Warren

Nye, James Warren (1815–1876)

US governor and senator. A gifted orator, he was appointed governor of the Nevada Territory (Republican; 1861–64), where he helped suppress the pro-slavery forces. He then served Nevada as one of its first two US senators (1864–73). He was born in Madison County, New York.
