nymph

In entomology, the immature form of insects that do not have a pupal stage; for example, grasshoppers and dragonflies. Nymphs generally resemble the adult (unlike larvae), but do not have fully formed reproductive organs or wings.

nymph

In Greek mythology, a guardian spirit of nature. Dryads or hamadryads guarded trees; naiads, springs and pools; oreads, hills and rocks; oceanids, the open sea; and Nereids, the Aegean.

The maiden companions of certain goddesses, such as Artemis, were also classed as nymphs.
