Nystroem, Gösta (1890-1966)

Swedish composer and painter. He was the son of a headmaster who taught him music and painting, which he afterwards studied at Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Paris, where Vincent d'Indy and Leonid Sabaneiev were among his masters for composition. He lived in Paris for 12 years and came under the influence of Picasso, Braque, Chirico, and other modern painters. After further studies in Italy and Spain, he settled at Göteborg and in 1933 became music critic of the Göteborgs Handelstidning.

four symphonies Sinfonia breve, Sinfonia espressiva, Sinfonia del mare, Sinfonia Shakespeariana; symphonic poems The Arctic Sea, The Tower of Babel; Lyric Suite and Festival Overture for orchestra; Concerto grosso for string orchestra; violin concerto; viola concerto; Sinfonia concertante for cello and orchestra.
