O'Hara, Maureen (1920– )

Irish actor well-known for her many screen appearances. She made her Hollywood debut as the gypsy Esmerelda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939). Often cast as a fiery woman tamed by a man, she became a favourite co-star of John Wayne, appearing with him in The Quiet Man (1952), McLintock (1963), and Big Jake (1971), among others.

O'Hara was born near Dublin, and joined the Abbey Players there at the age of 14. Her first film appearance was in Kicking The Moon Around (1938). She later appeared in The Black Swan (1942) and At Sword's Point (1952). She went into retirement in the 1970s, but made a comeback in Only The Lonely (1991).
