O'Higgins

Region in the Central Valley area of Chile, which takes its name from the country's 19th-century liberator Bernardo O'Higgins; area 16,341 sq km/6,309 sq mi; population (1996) 737,047. Barley, wheat, and maize are the main agricultural products, but fruit and wine are also grown widely. The great El Teniente copper mine, operated by the national copper-mining concern Codelco, lies 80 km/50 mi east of the capital Rancagua, on the border with the region of Santiago.
