O'Leary, David

    0.03 sec.

O'Leary, David (1949– )

Irish footballer, born in London, England. He was brought up in Dublin before returning to London in 1975 to join his compatriots Liam Brady and Frank Stapleton at Arsenal. A regular at centre-half for Arsenal, he won two FA Cup winners' medals but had to wait 14 years for his first league medal when a late Michael Thomas goal enabled Arsenal to steal the title from Liverpool. His loyalty to the club saw him set an all-time record of 722 appearances. Capped 68 times for the Republic of Ireland, his winning penalty in the shoot-out against Romania sent his side through to meet Italy in the World Cup quarter-finals in 1990.

He then managed Aston Villa from June 2003 until July 2006.
