O'Neill, Hugh

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.04 sec.

O'Neill, Hugh (c.1550–1616)

Irish chieftain and rebel. After repeatedly intriguing against Elizabeth I and her successor James I, he fled from Ireland into exile and died in Rome.

O'Neill was brought up in England at the house of Sir Henry Sidney. In 1602, he supported a Spanish invasion force, which had landed in Ireland to instigate a revolt against Elizabeth, but was defeated at the battle of Kinsale. He made his peace with James I, but was soon suspected of planning sedition once more, and left Ireland for good in 1607.
