O'Neill, Jonjo (1952– )| Irish National Hunt jockey. Twice the champion jockey, in 1977–78 and 1979–80, he also set a record of 148 winners in a season, which has since been broken. Despite sustaining many injuries and fractures, O'Neill established a reputation for fearlessness on the racecourse. In 1990 he became a trainer. |

| Born in Castletownroche, County Cork, O'Neill started as an apprentice jockey at The Curragh in Kildare, and was briefly at the stable of Gordon Richards before going freelance and concentrating on National Hunt racing. He rode ‘Sea Pigeon’ to victory in the Champion Hurdle in 1980 and won the Gold Cup on ‘Alverton’ in 1979, However, his greatest triumphs came riding ‘Dawn Run’, the only horse to have won both the Champion Hurdle (1984) and the Gold Cup (1986). |
