O'Neill, Jonjo

    0.03 sec.

O'Neill, Jonjo (1952- )

Irish National Hunt jockey. Twice the champion jockey, in 1977-78 and 1979-80, he also set a remarkable record of 148 winners in a season. Despite sustaining many injuries and fractures, O'Neill established a reputation for fearlessness on the racecourse.

Born in Castletownroche, County Cork, O'Neill started as an apprentice jockey at The Curragh in Kildare, and was briefly at the stable of Gordon Richards before going freelance and concentrating on National Hunt racing. He won the Champion Hurdle on ‘Sea Pigeon’ in 1980 and the Gold Cup on ‘Dawn Run’ in 1986.
