O'Neill, Shane (c. 1530-1567)

Irish chief. After a dispute over the succession to the title he expelled his father and seized the chieftainship. After initial support from Elizabeth I he launched attacks on both Ulster and the Pale, but was stopped by Sir Henry Sidney and the opposition of his rivals, the O'Donnells. He was virtually independent of English rule in Ulster.
