Residential suburb west of Chicago, northeastern Illinois, USA, 14 km/9 mi west of the Loop (downtown Chicago); population (1990) 53,600. The village contains numerous buildings designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who lived here for many years. Oak Park was settled in 1833, and became an important stopping point for Chicago-bound farmers. Situated at the junction of three different railway lines, the village developed rapidly into a rail suburb after the Chicago fire of 1871. It is the birthplace of writers Ernest Hemingway and Kenneth Fearing.
