Oakham

Town in Rutland, England, in the Vale of Catmose, 26 km/16 mi east of Leicester; population (2001) 10,000. It is the adminstrative headquarters of Rutland unitary authority. Shoes and knitted garments are manufactured here. Oakham Castle dates from the 12th century and has a Norman hall. There is an independent school founded in 1584.
