Oakland County

County of southeastern Michigan, USA, drained by the River Rouge and the Shiawassee, Clinton, and Huron rivers; area 2,266 sq km/875 sq mi; population (1990) 1,083,600. Its seat is Pontiac. The county's southeast section is occupied by Detroit's largely affluent northern suburbs and many business complexes, notably housing research and technology companies. Manufacturing takes place at Pontiac, Royal Oak, and Ferndale. The rural areas have apple, cherry, and peach orchards, and also yield livestock, poultry, dairy products, and field crops. Many resorts are situated on the county's numerous small lakes.
